On a national scale, the risk of suicide among gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning (LGBTQ) youth far surpasses that of their heterosexual counterparts. Research indicates that LGBTQ youth are significantly more likely to contemplate suicide, with rates of active suicide planning being 2.6 times higher than among straight youth. Moreover, the alarming statistic reveals that LGBTQ youth are four times more likely to attempt suicide compared to their heterosexual peers. Tragically, the disparity continues as LGBTQ youth require medical intervention for suicide attempts at a rate five times greater than that of heterosexual youth. These sobering statistics underscore the urgent need for comprehensive support and intervention measures to address the unique challenges faced by LGBTQ youth and mitigate the disproportionate risk of suicide within this vulnerable population.
